Sometimes locked widgets with identical IDs will not allow replacement and you might encounter a similar error when trying to upload the .xml file of your theme:

How to fix the error?

1. Go to Theme > click on the arrow next to Customize text. When the theme editor opens, click on the “Jump to Widget” icon.

2. Select the widget you want to remove from the list. If the error says something about Header1, look for the Header1 text in the list.

3. When you see the widget’s code, change true to false in locked=’true’.

4. Click on the “Save” icon and go to “Layout” again. You may need to refresh the page, but now you should be able to remove the widget.

Once the identical widget has been removed, the error should be gone and you will be able to install the theme.

If you’re a first time user, you may notice that the theme doesn’t look like in the demo – here are some of the things you need to do in order to make your theme shine:

1. Remove older widgets

When you first upload the theme, the previous widgets will appear in the available sections – please don’t panic if you see them all over the place! Just go to Layout and remove the unnecessary widgets while paying attention to not remove the new ones. Once the clutter is gone, the theme should look clean again.

2. Clear formatting

If you notice fonts are different, then you most likely need to clear formatting. When you clear formatting on Blogger posts, it removes all the unnecessary HTML and inline CSS. These inline styles can override your theme CSS and can also affect the seo of your site. Check out the fonts are different from the demo post to see how you can fix the problem.

3. Choose “Original Size” for Images

When you upload images to your posts, always select “Original size”. Don’t worry if the images exceed the post editor size, this is not how they will appear on your site. With this option, the images will fit the content area and the overall look will be improved as well.

Sometimes the number of posts per page setting may not work if your blog contains lots of images or iframes. This is due to a mechanism introduced by Blogger called auto pagination to make blogs load faster. You can read more about this on their announcement post.

How to fix this?

Add a jump break to the posts that contain lots of images or iframes. To insert jump break, edit the post and click right after the first image + some text, then click on the three dots (…) icon and jump break/line icon as shown below.

If you’re not sure how to do it, see the animation below.

Important

Any text or information that appears after the jump break line will not be shown on the index pages. If your theme should display more than one image on the homepage, then add the jump break after the images you want to show.

If you visit your site and find your slider or featured posts widget isn’t working, then check through each of these common problems; it’s highly likely one of these will be the cause:

1. Blog is set to Private

The slider uses the blog feed to display posts and when the blog is private, the feed is inactive. As soon as your blog is set to Public, the widget should start working. To check if your blog is Private, go to Settings > Basic and look for the “Blog Readers” setting in the “Permissions” section.

2. Feed problem

If the widget still doesn’t work, go to Settings > Other and make sure the “Allow Blog Feed” setting is set to Full. If it’s not set to Full, the widget can’t display posts.

3. Wrong label

If you want to display featured posts instead of recent posts, please double check that you added the same label that appears in your post. For example, if the label is written as “Fashion” in your post, but it has been added as “fashion” in the code, then the widget cannot find that category.

Finally, if none of the above solutions worked for you, please contact us on Etsy with your site address and we’ll try to see what’s the problem.

If you’re using our Blogger templates, you might encounter a few problems during the installation process. We’ve highlighted some of the common Blogger template issues and their fixes below:

Issue #1: Additional images not showing

Many themes require adding a jump break to show the post snippet instead of the full post. Unfortunately, this function might prevent additional images from appearing on the homepage and you may want to disable it.

How to fix this?

To show more content, you will manually have to remove the jump break from your posts.

1. Go to your post editor and click on the pencil icon located on the upper left side, then select <> HTML view.

2. Click anywhere inside the content area, then press CTRL + F (or Command + F) to open the search box > paste the following snippet inside it (press Enter to find it):

<!--more-->

Live example:

3. You need to REMOVE the snippet, then click the ‘Update’ button on the upper left side of the screen.

Issue #2: Full Post Displaying Instead of Summary

Some of our Blogger templates will use JavaScript to display the post summary. Since the script uses the post title tag inside quotation marks, make sure that the title of the blog posts doesn’t contain double quotes as well.

How to fix this?

The easiest way is to simply edit the post and replace the double quotation marks with single quotes (or any other symbol). However, this may not be the best option if there are lots posts to edit and you may want to skip that process – here’s what you need to do:

1. Go to Theme and click the Edit HTML button:

2. When you see the code editor, left click anywhere on the code area and press CTRL + F (or Command + F) to open the search box.

3. Search for the following code snippet:
